Yoga in the Satyananda Tradition

Satyananda is a holistic style of yoga, developed from ancient yogic wisdom and adapted to the needs of modern living by Swamis Satyananda and Niranjanananda. It draws together teachings and practices from hatha, raja, karma, bhakti and jnana yoga in a fashion that is broad and flexible enough to cater to individual needs and preferences.

A Satyananda Yoga class always aims to develop and deepen the student’s awareness of their own experience. This is done by creating an accepting and non-competitive environment in which to explore the practices. Through the development of awareness the student gains insight not only into the nature of the practices but into his or her own personality as well and embarks on a journey of self-discovery and transformation.

Yoga classes in the Satyananda tradition offer postures, breathing practices and meditation for students of all levels of ability.

A typical yoga class:

• Begins with a short relaxation to centre and forget the outside world for a while
• Moves into a series of yoga postures (asana) to relax the body, increase flexibility and remove energy blocks
• Further relaxes and focuses the mind while improving energy flow with breathing practices (pranayama)
• Before integrating and harmonising body, mind and spirit with deep relaxation (yoga nidra) and meditation

Private classes are tailored to suit the group or individual needs. Private classes can be booked as a one off or can be scheduled weekly, monthly etc for a regular practice.

Some of the many benefits you may receive include – greater flexibility and strength of bones, joints and muscles; improved posture and circulation; improve lung function; reduce stress, anxiety and depression; awaken creativity and inner potential; Connect with that inner safe, serene centre from which to live life using techniques from the ancient science of yogic psychology.

Core Yoga

The Core Yoga program is a Yoga/Pilates fusion class that blends strengthening movements for the “core muscles” of the abdomen, low back and hips, stretches for key muscles that can reduce low back pain, headaches and tension, and breathwork to cleanse and purify the body/mind. Containing both the richness of the Yoga experience as well as modern strengthening and stretching techniques, this program is designed to create a vibrantly healthy body, develop body/mind awareness, reduce the risk of injury and low back pain, and enhance active daily life.

Core Yoga is designed to maintain the rich, relaxing experience of Yoga, while offering movements designed to strengthen the whole body, and in particular muscles of the back and abdomen in an environment that, with regular practice, teaches the body to move correctly in everyday life. Movements are practiced slowly and with precision, and the focus on breathwork not only assists in reducing pain, but also enhances the oxygenation of the blood and clears the mind.

Core Yoga is a rapidly growing specialty yoga practice. Core Yoga is a great method on its own, and also a great compliment to a regular yoga or exercise regime, and an intelligent way for people to begin their Yoga journey safely; with a foundation of strength, flexibility, and breath awareness.
